A historical town situated one and a half hours' drive from Auckland. The small town is located between the Firth of Thames and the Coromandel Ranges.
Historic Coromandel Town is a haven for talented artists and craftspeople with quaint shops and kitch cafes. The town has a unique character and ambience reflecting its art and heritage. In 1852 the discovery of gold brought boom years to the town and the area has continued to flourish while retaining many of its heritage buildings.
Located at the base of The Coromandel the town's entrance is through the Karangahake Gorge, a beautiful picturesque natural gorge popular for its gold mining history, walkways, winery, fishing, rock climbing, swimming and Hauraki Rail Trail. Paeroa is also home to the ‘famous in New Zealand’ drink Lemon and Paeroa – L&P.
Lying across the harbour from the popular holiday destination of Tairua, Pauanui was the country's first canal housing development and purpose built holiday community. The white sand beaches are safe for swimming and surfing in most conditions. Visible from the coast are the islands of Slipper, Shoe and the Aldermen Islands.
A history of gold mining spanning three centuries is what draws visitors to Wahi and its local open-pit mine is still fully operational. Waihi and Paeroa sit at either end of the Karangahake Gorge.
Mercury Bay's main town of Whitianga is home of the world renowned Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. The ‘V’ shaped Mercury Bay is known for its endless marine experiences both on and under the water. Made up of seven islands, The Mercury Islands are just 8 kms (5 miles) off the beaches coast.
